SecuX Shield BIO: a card-sized hardware wallet with fingerprint unlock

The SecuX Shield BIO is a biometric card wallet for crypto and NFTs. It measures 85.5 x 54 x 1 mm and weighs 8 g, a design SecuX describes as credit card sized. It uses an Infineon SLE 97 Secure Element chip certified to CC EAL5+, unlocks with a registered fingerprint or a PIN, and has a 1.1-inch e-paper display for clear-sign confirmation on the card itself. It pairs with a phone over Bluetooth and suits people who want a cold wallet they can carry every day.

What the SecuX Shield BIO does

  • Fingerprint unlock: register up to two fingerprints, then unlock the card with a fingerprint or with your PIN.
  • Fingerprint approval: two-factor authentication is on by default and asks for a registered fingerprint to authorise a transaction.
  • Certified Secure Element: an Infineon SLE 97 chip with CC EAL5+ certification.
  • E-paper display: 1.1 inches at 148 x 70 pixels, for clear-sign confirmation on the card.
  • Asset support: SecuX lists 10,000+ NFTs, coins and tokens and up to 500 accounts.
  • Bluetooth and apps: Bluetooth 5 BLE to iOS and Android, with WalletConnect and QR-based MetaMask integration.
  • Charging dock: the card charges through its metal contacts in the supplied USB charging dock.

Who the SecuX Shield BIO suits and what it works with

SecuX describes the Shield BIO as a portable cold wallet with biometric security. It connects over Bluetooth to SecuX’s mobile app on iOS 12 or later and Android 6.0 or later. For decentralised apps it supports WalletConnect 2.0 in the mobile app and QR-based MetaMask integration. A recovery phrase that follows the BIP-32, BIP-39 and BIP-44 standards can be restored onto the card.

How do you unlock the SecuX Shield BIO?

With a registered fingerprint or with your PIN. SecuX’s guide says you can register up to two fingerprints, and the PIN is a number of 4 to 8 digits.

Does the SecuX Shield BIO need a fingerprint for every transaction?

By default it does. Two-factor authentication is enabled by default and requires a registered fingerprint to authorise a transaction. If you turn it off, you still press the fingerprint pad to confirm, but without biometric verification.

How is the SecuX Shield BIO charged?

The card sits in the supplied charging dock with its metal contacts on the dock’s charging pad, and a red light shows that it is charging. SecuX advises charging it for at least 2 hours before setup. The battery is a built-in 14 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion cell.

What happens if the card is lost or damaged?

SecuX’s guide says that after theft, loss or damage to the device you can recover your digital assets with your recovery seed phrase. During setup you choose the number of words in the phrase and write them on a recovery sheet from the box. Keep the words offline and never photograph them. SecuX warns that ignoring its safety instructions could result in theft or unrecoverable loss of funds.

Which coins and tokens does it support?

SecuX lists 10,000+ NFTs, coins and tokens for the Shield BIO, and its comparison page gives 10,000+ coins and tokens on 300+ chains, with NFT support on Ethereum. Check SecuX’s supported assets list for a specific coin before you rely on it.
