SecuX PUFido Clife Key: a USB-C FIDO2 security key built on a PUF chip

The SecuX PUFido Clife Key is a USB-C security key for passwordless sign-in and two-factor authentication. SecuX describes it as a FIDO security key with built-in PUF (Physically Unclonable Function) technology and states that it is FIDO2 and U2F certified. You plug it in, enter your PIN when a FIDO2 service asks for it, and press the button on the key to confirm.

What the SecuX PUFido Clife Key does

  • Passwordless sign-in: with FIDO2 you insert the key and enter its PIN in place of a password.
  • Two-factor authentication: with U2F the key is the second step after your username and password.
  • PUF security chip: SecuX says the PUF technology regenerates the private key at every authentication, so that no private key is stored on the device.
  • USB-C and LED indicator: the LED blinks 3 times when the connection succeeds and blinks repeatedly while the key waits for you to press the button.
  • Cross-platform: SecuX lists Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and ChromeOS.
  • Made in Taiwan: the key is manufactured in Taiwan.

Who the SecuX PUFido Clife Key suits and what it works with

SecuX positions the key for online accounts, enterprise environments and personal devices. It works with services that support FIDO2 or U2F, and SecuX’s own list of commonly used platforms includes Google, Microsoft, Apple, GitHub, Dropbox, Facebook, 1Password, Bitwarden, Okta and Cloudflare. SecuX asks users to check each service for specific compatibility.

SecuX recommends having more than one PUFido security key, one as the primary key and one as a backup, so that you can still reach your accounts if the primary key is lost. See the rest of the range under Security Drives, or contact us with a question about this key.

Does the SecuX PUFido Clife Key need a PIN?

SecuX states that a PIN is needed for FIDO2 passwordless authentication and is not required for U2F. The PIN is verified on the key itself and is not sent to the server. SecuX recommends 4 to 63 characters, with upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters.

What happens if I enter the wrong PIN?

After 8 wrong PIN entries in a row a warning appears, and you must remove and reinsert the key before you enter the correct PIN. One more wrong entry locks the key. A locked key needs a factory reset, which removes everything from the security key.

Which devices and browsers does the SecuX PUFido Clife Key work with?

SecuX lists Windows 10 version 1809 or later, macOS Mojave or later, Linux, Android 7 or later and iOS 16.3 or later, with the latest versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Windows 7 and 8 are not supported. On macOS and Linux, SecuX says that registering, changing and deleting the PIN requires the Chrome browser.

How does the SecuX PUFido Clife Key differ from the PUFido Drive Clife Key?

Both are PUF-based FIDO2 and U2F keys from SecuX. The SecuX PUFido Clife Key is the authentication key on its own, which SecuX describes as daily account protection for everyday users. The Drive version adds 128 GB of storage and an IP 68 water and dust rating.
